Well, first and foremost, I have finished the Philosopher's Coat! It has been a long, hard road to get this thing done. I have used more than 4 miles of yarn and spent many months crocheting but the end result is gorgeous, if I do say so myself.

So besides working on the coat, I took a little time and did a few swaps with the Odd Ducks of Ravelry. I was in a Firefly swap where I made a shiny strawberry project bag.

And then I did a Day of the Dead swap where I made this great tote bag.

For November I did a sushi swap. I made some great cedar sachets for my swapee.

And I did a tea swap where I made an adorable tea set.

I am going to be starting on a few Christmas presents next.

I have just purchased a new purse, which is always a trying experience. I can never seem to find something that fits all my needs. I got the latest bag from ebay (Which leads me to a quick question. Why the heck do people snipe a bid when there are 6 of the same identical items up with no bids on them? Do people simply enjoy sniping bids?) Needless to say, it looks promising. Having used the Buxton Organizer for a few months now, I got very used to having a lot of space and a sling bag shape but I really hated that the only thing holding most of my stuff in was the snap flap. My stuff kept falling out around the edges and I lost countless pens out the side. This bag is more zippered pouches, so I'm hoping that won't be an issue. The one thing it was missing was a cell phone holder. I don't use my cell phone much but I really don't want to have to go digging for it when I need it. I had originally thought I'd use my Piore cell bag but it is really looking a lot worse for the wear these days. Instead, I designed and made a Totoro cell cozy and a matching Totoro strap charm. I'm not entirely sure if I'm just going to have the cozy snap to the purse or if I'm going to make a small strap that will snap to itself or a plastic ring or something. I need to get the purse in to figure out exactly where I want to hang the phone first.

These were a nice break from the Philosopher's Coat, which can feel like it's taking over the universe sometimes.

The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat Back

I finished the back of the Philosopher's Coat. It is amazing and huge. It was a real pain to do the last bunch of rows because of all the cables (which is partially my own fault for adding them and the crossed doubles instead of the raised doubles that would have been way too many inches across and, of course, the fact that the pattern is simply off the same way it was for the sleeves, thus leaving me several inches short of the supposed width.) The problem with the cables is just how many times I have to flip the whole thing around--and they eat up yarn! I've already bought some more yarn to make sure I can finish this project but I might need to buy a bit more. We'll see. It's not like it's a huge tragedy to buy more Peaches & Creme. The yarn is so nice and I keep getting the coolest stuff in the grab bags (which I must purchase every time I order.) I got some rayon Petalspun in a royal blue and some crochet thread as well as some great worsted. It's such a bargain.

Back to the coat, here is a picture of the full back in all it's glory.

Unraveling....

I have never ever had a problem with a project unraveling. Well, I have had kitties and doggies who pull my yarn and then it unravels from the end I'm working on. And, while that might annoy me a lot, it isn't the end of the universe. Sunday I lost a piece of the Philosopher's Coat to it unraveling IN THE MIDDLE. Well, technically not the middle. It was in what would be the dead center of the coat and it was at the start or end of a color change. Still, this never happens. I'm very careful with how I secure the ends, so this was a huge shock. After much crying and desperately trying to stitch the two pieces together, I had to admit that the whole thing was just coming apart. Thankfully I was able to keep a majority of the half of the back I'd been working on. The pattern actually has you make a center panel and then continue to the right, reattach on the other side of the center panel and then go left. With some careful unraveling, I was able to remove the center panel and now will redo the center panel and then go to the left. Hopefully it will turn out about the same and look fine. It became too much drama and stress, though, and I needed a break soI worked on some things for a swap I'm in. I did two thread amigurumis which must remain a surprise until my spoilee gets her package. I don't want to ruin the fun for her just in case she happens to be reading along. ;)

Tonight I think I will be starting back on my Philosopher's Coat. I'm feeling much better about it now and can't wait to get the back finished. All of the colors are pretty well set as the pattern is mirrored and repeated for the remainder of the piece so it should be fairly easy. I can't wait to get the whole back done. I think it's amazingly powerful to see so much of my color choices and stitches all in one place.

Two Sleeves!

The amazing technicolor dream coat is growing quite well. I have managed to finish the second sleeve and I'm cruising right along. The second sleeve went much faster because I know the stitches now and had all my colors already picked--although I do know better how to arrange the colors now so that should be easier from now on. I just love how this is turning out. The colors and patterns are just so amazing and I'm still madly in love with Peaches & Creme yarn. It's so soft and lovely.

I should be starting on the body today. Yay! This is really coming together nicely.

The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat Sleeve

I finished the first sleeve on the Philosopher's Coat. There were some issues with the pattern (ugh!) First of all, the stitch descriptions were terrible. At least two of them (crossed doubles and diamonds) had me going in circles. I did figure them out but it took me a bit. I also found that the sleeve chart is really missing an entire repeat. When I finished the stitches on the chart, I was only at 15" and not the 18" promised length. I checked my gauge (the diamonds are 8 rows, so they should be 2" according to the gauge and mine were.) As I looked at the picture of the coat in the pattern, I realized that there should be an additional row of knurls (to make 2,) a row of crossed doubles, two rows of knurls, a row of cables and ending with one row of knurl. If you look a the pattern chart, these rows repeat twice but I think it should be three times. That extra repeat adds up to 3" and brings me to the correct 18" length. Knowing what I know, the second sleeve should go a lot easier.

And let's not forget operator error. I spent a bunch of time pulling out some of the knurl rows and changing the colors. I just wanted the colors to balance and there were a few colors that I had more difficulty adding in than others. I'm very pleased with the results so it was time well spent. Now that I have a better feel for how the colors work together that shouldn't be as much of a problem when I get to the body of the coat.

My brother married the most wonderful woman this past Saturday (June 21). I spent ages trying to figure out what to give them. They had specifically said that they didn't need household stuff--it was a second marriage for both, so they had both already had homes with all the necessities. I really just wanted to make something to commemorate their special day--and the fact that the three of them were becoming a family. That led me to thinking it would be really cool to make them an amigurumi bride and groom. I asked my brother for details on the wedding clothes and hunted down some pictures of the three of them so that I could match hair color and such. After attempting to hunt down yarn, I decided that thread was a better choice and using a few strands of embroidery floss would give me a lot of options for hair color. I found a pretty beige that was pink enough to look like a convincing flesh-tone. Originally, I had thought to use some pretty safety eyes but the thread amigurumis wound up so much smaller (about 3.5") and looked very much like heirloom projects so I decided to do closed eyes. I also decided to link them all in some way after having them toppling over on the desk I was placing them on while working on them. I wanted them to be able to stand on their own. Having the bride take the groom's arm and the groom put his hand on the best man's shoulder seemed to be the best answer--and how symbolic of a family. I did take notes so there might be a chance of me writing up the pattern at some point. Without further ado, here are the bride and groom.

I've decided to make the Philosopher's Coat designed by Ruth Atkinson (found in Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet.) I've chosen to make it in Peaches & Creme cotton yarn instead of Philosopher's Wool. I have a wool allergy that doesn't allow me to work with wool. I can wear it sometimes, but I really can't play with it without suffering. The P&C is a really soft and lovely cotton yarn (and one of my favorites) that comes in so many colors that it was a logical choice as a substitution. My yarn arrived today. Here's a picture of it all arranged to give you an idea of the color palate I'm using.

My friend Matty said that the yarn was bright. It's funny that I hadn't really noticed that it was bright but I do always seem to pick bright colors. They just make me happy.

As I write this, the yarn is in the washing machine. I always wash my yarn first. I tie them into pieces of the legs of pantyhose and then wash and dry them. That way I won't have to worry about the finished item needing to be blocked or not being able to be washed without shrinking. The hardest part of it is that it takes several times through the dryer and then usually re-spinning the balls so that the inside is on the outside because the inside is always the damp part. It's a lot of work but it will be worth it. This coat will be amazing when it's done.

Meez and Anime Boston

I've joined the Meez craze thanks to the Long Hair Loom. This is my Meez dressed for Anime Boston. I've managed to get both my Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket and Kikyo from InuYasha costumes done and they are ready to wear. We pick up our badges on Thursday--although Mike has to go to a company meeting that day (doesn't it just figure?) Thankfully, he's managed to get his boss to let him out early. Friday bright and early we head off to the Hynes and begin our long weekend vacation in the world of anime. They finally approved the panel on amigurumi that I was planning to help present. That should be a lot of fun. I'm sure I'll have a lot to say after the con.

Using pink yarn, sew heart on belly.
Using black yarn, sew eyes.
Using red yarn, sew mouth.

and a purple purse made from Lily Chin's book Couture Crochet Workshop: Mastering Fit, Fashion, and Finesse, which my mom gave me for my birthday.

I'm now working on Drops Shawl 95-38 http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=95&d_id=38&lang=en (Incidentally, if you haven't discovered Garnstudio and Drops yet, be prepared to spend a lot of hours browsing through their hundreds of free patterns. They rock my universe.) I got yarn from my LYS, Butterfly Yarns http://butterflyyarns.com/ I think I cleaned out their bargain bin single-handed. I got a huge amount of Berroco Quest in a lovely raspberry, green, silver variegated and some in plain silver. I paired it with some Berroco Softy in First Frost (light green) and Love Potion (raspberry). I really like the look of the two yarns together in this project. The centers done in the Softy make me think of carnations or chrysanthemums and the centers done in Quest look like daisies. I can't wait to finish this shawl.

I have a few amigurumis I haven't managed to post here. The first is a seahorse that I tested for the talented Jennifer Reeve (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5241210). I was so glad to find a nice looking sea horse to add to my Fruits Basket collection.

I also made Jennifer's Here Fishy, Fishy, Fishy. It's technically a cat toy, but, as you can see from the photos, Max thought it was just perfect for him.

Next is my first ami made from a Japanese pattern. It's a little chestnut found here: http://tinyurl.com/3x33k8 He's cute and I just wanted something simple to make.

I have been making many things but they are all for Christmas so I can't really post them here yet. I don't want anyone's surprise being ruined.

I seem to have disappeared into Ravelry lately. Wow, the stuff you can learn there! There's also way too much temptation! I have ordered yarn to make a Drops shawl and an amigurumi book in Japanese, which should be arriving soon. Ugh! I wish I could post pictures and show what I've been working on but I just can't. Let me say, though, that all of my stuff is really amazing and everyone should be happy with their Christmas presents this year.

Speaking of Christmas presents, Max's Secret Santa gift party is next weekend. I'm so excited. The box has been sitting on top of the TV for a week. Max always loves his presents.

I finished my very first crocheted sweater. It's Butterfly Wrap from Stitch Diva Studios (http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=SDS-030) I think it turned out really well and it only took me a month to finish! I did make it a bit shorter to adjust for my constant sitting (either on the scooter or on the couch) and changed the sleeves because I found their lace cuff very stretchy and it was so open that it looked like I'd switched to a huge hook. I continued the pattern stitch to the end of the sleeves and then did picots. I used Bernat Cool Crochet in Denim and ArtYarns Silk Ribbon 108 for the ties.

I've been awfully busy lately. Still crocheting up a storm. I've made two more amigurumis. These are two of the bunch I'm hoping to make for my Fruits Basket costume. I made a sheep named Hiro and a bunny named Momiji. The bunny pattern was a free pattern from Lion Brand. http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60480A.html?noImages=0 I changed the colors to make the bunny look like Momiji in the anime. The lamb came from a pattern posted on Crafster. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=155762.0

I've been working on a Butterfly Wrap sweater from Stitch Diva Studios. http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=SDS-030 I saw it and fell madly in love with it. It's the first sweater I've crocheted and it's working up very nicely. I have just started putting on the waist detail and I'm only doing the cardi length, so it shouldn't be too long before that's done.

I took Max to Doggy Days this weekend. He had a great time seeing other people and dogs. He also got to try all of the agility equipment that they set up inside the fenced in tennis courts (brilliant idea, huh?) The only two things he didn't really want to do were the collapsed tunnel and the ring that was raised. To be fair, it was a gorgeous, cloudless day and the sun was beating down on everyone. I was hot and tired and I know he was too. Of course, Max hates to drink water when there are things to see or hear, so we had to work really hard to keep him cool and hydrated. Apparently, Max knows how to get himself nice and cool as he walked into the wading pool (put there for doggies to drink from) and plunked himself down. He did drink some but he spent several minutes just enjoying the cool water all over his body. He's such a smart boy.

The Beginning

I've been rather creative lately and thought I would begin a journal to showcase all of my creative projects. My latest crafting has been crochet. I actually only began crocheting this past winter. I had tried to learn years and years ago but it just didn't take until now. I guess that's how things go sometimes. I started with a bunch of scrunchies and now I've moved on to other things. My first large project was a Wagon Wheel shawl. This is the shawl made with a pattern found here: http://members.aol.com/SAG55/wwshawl.html

It was such a fun project to make. I'm sure it will be keeping me warm in the upcoming days.

It was then that I became an amigurumi addict. My first creation was a little pig from the pattern posted here: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27147 I named my pig Petal.

I'm currently working on a bunny amigurumi that looks like Momiji from the anime Fruits Basket. I'm hoping to make each of the animals in Fruits Basket to enhance my costume for the next AnimeBoston. I'm planning to go as Tohru. Well, all the animals except the dog. My dog, Max, looks very much like Shigure. Max is my service dog, so he's already been to one AnimeBoston with me. I think it would be great to have him as part of my costume. This is a picture of him riding on my scooter with me.
